Social media helps to build ideas and interacts with each people by sharing information, photos, videos, and thoughts. Which makes the world more open and connected with each other and it has become part of people’s lives. But it also has some negative effects on social media.

Every day more than 90 percent of people visit social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, Linked In, WhatsApp, Pinterest, and online gaming and other tools. Most people constantly use social media in order to check status updates or to upload pictures on social media sites, and for entertainment and business purposes too. As the time passing by social media it is creating a negative impact on people’s mind, health, students getting fail in education, business, society, and youth.

Thus, over utilization of social media makes people adopt different lifestyles by copying with their favorite stars in social media which might get positive or negative comments or trolls. Some other people use to connect with people who inspire us, share similar interests and provides a sense of belonging, some other people will start comparing themselves to others, some people will learn new information from various sources every day, some people will promote their business all over the world through social media. Through social media, you can become a successful person or an unsuccessful person in today’s world. It is a good lesson to learn and make practical to avoid much use of social media in your life.

Depression and anxiety are emotional symptoms. Most people are facing this problem in today’s world. In the case of individuals who are diagnosed with depression and anxiety tends with low mood, difficulty in sleeping, waking early, difficulty in concentration, poor decisions, decreased energy, feeling pessimistic, anger, irritability, feeling sluggish, changes in appetite or weight, and sometimes thought of death or suicide attempts.

New research has revealed that using high social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp can greatly affect your mental health, major negative impact in the workplace, a deficit about your self-life or appearance which promotes to comparing himself/herself to others, editing pictures in order to match up to others, bothered himself/herself that everyone seemed to be financially better off, in a more loving relationship, having better homes, dream job and traveling the world. Naturally, it will fill with a sense of emptiness and complete worthlessness.

Thus, using high social networking sites brings absolutely unbearable depression and anxiety. Depression and anxiety can be minimized through committing to yoga activities, traveling, sports, and engaging in your hobbies, etc.

Before social media, bullying was done face to face, but today many people get bullied online unidentified. Cyberbullying or internet harassing behavioral will be like commenting rubbish about your personality online, posting misleading information about victim person, threats, trolling, sending the victim person pornography or other graphic material that is knowingly offensive, creating a fake profile on victim person, downloading victim person pictures in different social media sites and giving torturing by keeping their picture and messaging them unpleasantly this is called cyberbullying or internet harassing. Cyberbullying or internet harassment can lead to self-harm or even death.

How to overcome cyberbullying or internet harassment:

  1. Do not tell your password.
  2. Do not share your personal information, picture, and videos on social media platforms.
  3. Change your password frequently and keep your email password at least twelve character longer passwords. Make sure that password has combined with capital and lower case letters, numbers, and symbols. Example Tara@_1994 etc.
  4. Keep a record of any harassing activity.
  5. Stop participating in the group. If someone added you to the group please exit from the group in order to be safe
  6. Log out after using social media networking sites.
  7. Save all communication for evidence, both electronically and in print. Don’t trash it unnecessary.

Especially, through social media, we can connect with family, friends, and other people, even though they stay thousands of miles apart from us. Moreover,social media has enriched our life by connecting and inspiring people.

On another side, too much use of social media brings a negative impact on users it will withdraw from family and friends and spend most of their time on social networking sites, lose interest in work, studies, and other activities which is very important for personal life. Too much use of social media is dangerous for the eyes and brain. Thus, too much use of social media is more dangerous than cigarettes, liquor, and drugs.

Spending too much time alone on social media has been shown to cause physical problems such as neck pain, lower back problems, eye strain, and headaches. Also, the way we sit around and communicate on social media can cause physical illnesses such as heart disease, lack of nutrition,  risk of stroke, and specific types of cancers. I challenge you to take a 15minute break and relax whenever you get strain in your body. This will help you to control the high usage of the internet and social media. So that you can overcome the negative impact on social media. You can save a lot of time that you are probably wasting browsing through social media.

Millions of people upload massive feeds and status each day. People will like, comment, and share various feeds and statuses on various social media networks. While scrolling new feeds and status we can see current news, a lot of violent pictures and videos uploaded on social media. That posted violence will affect mental and spiritual well-being naturally it causes stress and also stress is very high on people who regularly use online social media platforms because there will be no physical activities like walking, cycling, swimming, playing, and jogging. Physical activity will blast stress and pumps up your endorphins, strengthen your bones and muscles, improve heart health, and improves your quality of life.

On other hand, social media users affect their self-esteem by battling for likes and comments and comparing themselves to others by stalking their perfect social media accounts. Such a thing leads to dissatisfaction with self and spoils their own growth.

Undoubtedly, we live in a world where people are highly focused on comparing their body size, shape or appearance, age, skin color, and clothing in mirrors, selfies, and body-snarking with unrealistic thoughts and ideas. This may lead to unhealthy behavior like mood disorders, disordered eating, relationship problems, body dysmorphic disorder, and self-harm tendencies. For most people, it isn’t simple as “I love my body” or “I don’t like my body” Because people are comparing their appearance or physical body to people in Facebook, Instagram images, or whatever platform they’re on, and often judge themselves to be worse off.

Tips to build a better body image

  1. Occupy your mind.
  2. Commit to the activities that make you feel good like dancing, singing, and cooking, etc
  3. Remind yourself that your true beauty and stop comparing yourself to others.
  4. Surround yourself with positive people.
  5. Avoid using social media much.
  6. Getting a massage, doing yoga and laughing, etc.

Evidently, a higher level of social media usage creates a barrier in communication among husband and wife, marital problems, infidelity, conflicts, jealousy and eventually divorce. Many couples have been complaining about each other being excessively using social media on their smartphones.Thus, using social media makes less and less connected with their partners and doesn’t make them feel like first priority in there life and it will be linked to couples fighting more. So, it’s better to avoid using much social media in order to build fruitful marital relationship.
